Rockhampton | March 16

One of the biggest days on the Rockhampton racing calendar is here! St Paddy's Day! It's only a matter of time until they give Rocky a metro Saturday with 10 races - it's what the punters want - but we'll have to settle for 6 of the best out of the Beef Capital this afternoon.

Race 1: 3YO Handicap (1200m)

The favourite is pretty smart I think, bolting in in both of his career starts to date. No betting opportunity at those odds, but chuck him in a multi!

Race 2: 2YO Handicap (1100m)

I thought the market had it bang on here, with Cryptostar odds-on. He bolted in against a very average bunch two back here over the 1050m, but absolutely put paid to them, before running fairly in town behind All Inclusive where he started $12. Back to Rocky against another average lot, he should be winning again.

Satherley and Birchley combine.

Race 3: Open Handicap (1100m)

Good race this. Honkytonk Diva is a better horse fresh, but I like her kept to 1100m here and getting plenty of weight relief given the rise in grade. There's good speed in the race with Blue Kentucky Moon and Win Burn likely to both be stamped urgent out of the machine, which will give this mare a cushy run in behind the tempo. She should be strong late.

Race 4: Maiden Handicap (1400m)

Having two bets here. The first one is Just Bingo who should have won last start at Thangool when just given none. He got out when it was all over and hit the line well. Can go one better here. The other is Ready To Groove who is just a big price. Four starts ago he went super behind Desert Moon over 1200m, then went straight to the mile, back to 1200m and then 1300m last start where it went half alright from the back. With Chris McIver taking over and a good draw to contend with, hopefully he can settle closer and be giving a sight at big odds.

Race 5: Class 3 Plate (1050m)

Doubting Eye has been in good form, but I really liked the return of Sundara off a long spell last start behind Valtino and Nano Star. She meets Nano Star 2kg better here, has now had the run under her belt and gets Justin Stanley in the saddle. She can just play the stalking role here.

Race 6: Benchmark 55 Handicap (1200m)

Skylight Song can make it a winning CQ debut after some strong NSW provincial form behind the likes of Hollywood Hero and Sydney Bowler in his past five starts. From the middle draw, Ash Butler will go forward and look to control it, making his main dangers work from the outside draws. With some freshness in his legs, he will take beating here first-up.
