G'day Mugs, here we are, the winners, the losers, the woeful and the wonderful.
Come on a journey with us as we revisit Saturday’s Racing from Doom… ben

Doomben Racecourse – Rail +0.5m – Soft 7 upgraded to a Soft 5 after Race 7
Race 1 – QTIS 2YO HCP – 1110m
Winner: Military Gambler $39
Time: 1:05.37
The first of three 1110m races for the day gave us a good indicator of where you wanted to be in the straight; it also gave punters a chance to get in position, the fetal position, as the Munce Racing-trained Mililtary Gambler ($39 SP) came from the clouds to overhaul the well backed favourite, Stellar Magic ($1.80 fav) and the Heathcote fancied Startantes ($4). The trifecta spaced the rest of the field and look to be the three to follow going forward, more than likely in 2 weeks back at Doomben over the 1200m.
Race 2 – Open HCP – 2000m
Winner: Humbolt Current $1.80 FAV
Time: 2:05.28

The weekly Chris Waller middle distance winner‘a wheel landed on Humbolt Current this week, with the track upgraded to a soft, they weren’t out to break any land speed records with a slowly ran 2000.
It was absolutely D-day for punters with Humbolt Current, if he couldn’t put away this field, geeeeeez....... And didn‘t he make punters work for their $1.80.
With Dittman not able to make the weight, Byrne used the lanes off the fence to stalk the pace and win on class and class alone.
Dalmatia Prince was as honest as the day is long, but just ran into the wrong end of the handicapper here to carry the same weight as HC.
The jury is out on a couple of runners here, Sir Barnabus just might not go a yard at Doomben and/or the soft and Alward looks like he’s ready for 2200m and beyond but may struggle to find a suitable race here in QLD over the next fortnight.
Look for this absolute class field again in 2 weeks over the 2000m. Woo.
Race 3 – BM85 Handicap – 1600m
Winner: Guise $3 FAV
Time: 1:38.51
The Byrne/Waller show rolled on here with the well backed ($4>$3) Guise diving late to drive out a brave Captivator ($16) and Seat of Power ($5.5).
There was a bit in the steward‘s report for the place getters; Guise seemed to be the cause of most of the damage laying in down the straight and potentially costing Barefoot a better result.
Happy to follow Barefoot out of this race; will be nearing full fitness now and think her best runs can come over the 1600m -1800m away from Doomben, with plenty of pace in the race.
Race 4 – 3YO Handicap – 1350m
Winner: Rollinwiththeflow $10
Time: 1:20.10
Well that’s why they pay 'Wiggo' the big bucks! Rollinwiththeflow looked the obvious speed in the race and absolutely had it on a silver platter.
The Jewel form seems to be standing up from the Gold Coast a few weeks ago, as that form saluted the trifecta.
Tara Jasmine was the absolute forgive runner after an absolute peach of a ride by the onboard apprentice was never given a chance. Criminal Defence doing what Criminal Defence does, missing the start and storming home late, Bundyandcoke disappointing on face value and looks to have come to the end of his prep.
Would love to see Criminal Defence get back out to the mile again, the winner looks worth following if he’s able to map well over the 1350-1400m.
Race 5 – Open Handicap – 1350m
Winner: Vanna Girl $3.90 FAV
Time: 1:20.04
The fastest 1350m of the day on paper, yet still crawled up front. Constant Flight had all favours to suit but we all know it was just a matter of time until the Fraddmeister pushed the button on Vanna Girl to put this field to the sword.
With the late scratching of Wren’s Day and Group 1 ambitions, (Coolmore Legacy Stakes) the question was simply how had she come back to the races.
Agassi the forgive run in the field here after finding himself 17 wide in a field of 7, the jury is out on Love You Lucy.
Cloak looked to race a little green down the straight and looks like one to follow second up.
Race 6 – Colts + Geldings Class 3 – 1110m
Winner: Weona Smartone $1.60 FAV
Time: 1:03.96

David Van 'Doomben' knows he’s got a good one here; straight to the front and that’s all she wrote! The HK fall through is QLD’s gain as he looks like he’s in store for bigger and better things.
Weona Smartone put away a handy Saturday field including consistent Gollan pair Leadership Spill and The Move and is certainly one to follow; just forget about ever getting a price.
Contemptuous the one to follow going forward. The O’dea/Hoysted-trained galloper was slow to begin, was in the wrong part of the track and stormed down the outside. He looks to be screaming for 1200 and has plenty of options to get that over the next couple of weeks.
Jim Byrne received a 6 day suspension for his ride on The Move in this race.
Race 7 – Fillies + Mares Class 3 – 1110m
Winner: Explosive Quality $8.50
Time: 1:04.64
Substantially slower than the boys version but Explosive Quality lives up to her name to launch late and win in a blanket finish. The team were certainly up and about with the win, expecting some big things this prep from this girl. Stewards report confirmed Snitzari ($2.5F) was absolutely cooked and will be turned out for a spell. Zoukhina was the flashing light late but don’t know if this race screams ‘form lines’.
Happy to follow the winner going forward as she seems to be the only one early enough in her prep to have the most upside, will love the 1200-1350 this prep.
Race 8 – 3YO Handicap – 1050m
Winner: Toorooloo $3.60
Time: 1:00.99
Snappy Reply backers are still banging their heads against whatever bloody wall they can find. Barges through the gates, vetted for what seemed like 700 minutes, then of course ol mate vet on the TAB payroll see’s it $4.60 into $2.80 and what do you know! Passed fit!
Regardless of that Mugspiracy, David Van 'Doomben’s' Toorooloo couldn’t be more impressive, Zingalong continues to be as consistent as ever and Snappy Reply just couldn’t sustain that speed first-up.
Be Water My Friend was the surprise packet here; travelled three wide for most of the trip and was able to produce a great turn of foot. He’s eligible for some easier races so watch this fella pop up somewhere and make sure you’re on!
I’ll be following the top 4 over the line here. It seems to be the top QLD 3YO formline right now along with Simply Fly, Miami Fleiss, Blue Zebra + Kisukano, it’s a good even bunch.
Race 9 – Class 6 Handicap – 1200m
Winner: Lashes $3.90 FAV
Time: 1:10.50
Lashes was the only one Punters wanted in the last and she needed every metre of the 1200 for Mr Fradd, but she got there! Guntantes, huge in defeat after missing the start and Royal Hale a victim of the bad barrier. Hold The Line and Arthur In Charge the other two with noted runs.
I think this will be handy little form race which makes life absolutely great when trying to do form going forward.
Guntantes and Arthur In Charge looked to be suited back to benchmark system.
Win of the Day: Weona Smartone
For the MugBook.
Barefoot: Look for next start at 1600-1800 at a spacious track Eagle Farm/Sunshine Coast
Contemptuous: Ran on well against the pattern, 1200m seems to be the go
Explosive Quality: In for a big prep, keep handy
