The Mug's Mundy Metro Review

Well, we got the hell away from Eagle Farm last weekend, turned left, drank many sorrows away at Galloper's Sports Bar then buckled in for what looked like a bit of a sub par off season meet and Doomben... And boy oh boy, were we 300% correct.

Doomben Racecourse - Rail +2.5m - Soft 6 upgraded to a Soft 5 after Race 4

REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY QRIC.... After Race 4?

Race 1 - QTIS 2YO HCP - 1200m

Winner: Startantes $3.60

Time: 1:11.42

Well the hot formline was the one that saluted, with Military Gambler and Startantes rounding out the quinella; however decided to run in opposite racing patterns to what they did the start before! How good is formlines! Ahooshu was unwanted by the punters as he drifted to $4.20 from a $3.30 FAV opening quote. Balmaurice looked the only other worth noting finishing off strong and by the champion miler Maurice he'll get better over further.

Race 2 - Open Handicap - 2020m

Winner: Seat Of Power $6.10

Time: 2:05.76

We're still trying to grasp this race; Seat of Power the obvious leader in the race, elected to advise stewards they wanted to opt for cover instead?

Then Alward decides to try and lead for perhaps the first time in his racing career? And in a field of 7, race favourite Humbolt Current somehow manages to be about 8L last on the turn. Kudos to you if you found the winner, now hopefully these 7 horses elect to spell and Chris Waller brings a new team of D grade middle distance stayers for us to experience this pain all over again next week.

We’re not even going to put up a replay

Race 3 - BM90 HCPO - 1615m

Winner: Barefoot $14

Time: 1:38.57

Well the Mugs Mundy Review and the MugBook has paid dividends, ONE RACE TOO EARLY. Like us, Barefoot was unwanted in the market and when your record is 0/8 at Doomben it was clear to see why. However the 5YO mare put away this field convingly showing us she's returned in great order and can hopefully hold her form.

Cloak continues to be a head scratcher this prep and Captivator was again brave just finding one better on the day, He's one we're going to follow going forward as he's still going to get a bit of weight relief in a similar field in a fortnight. We're following the quinella and in classic Mug fashion, we won't be getting these prices next start.

Race 4 - Benchmark 72 - 1200m

Winner: Fender $3.60

Time: 1:10.24

The hype was real; the Bender was on for young and old as the 4YO gelding absolutely toyed with his rivals over the 1200m. Amiche was disappointing on face value and was under riding a long way out, don't get us wrong the owners won't be complaining on a third place cheque but as a beaten favourite on 5 occasions now she's become problematic for the punters. Fender will more than likely find some harder races now and could be a player over the Winter Carnival. What rhymes with Fender?

Race 5 - BM72 HCP - 1615m

Winner: Express Princess $2.90

Time: 1:37.79

In a race riddled with scratching's, one thing was solid throughout and that was market confidence around Express Princess and she did not disappoint. Barrier 9 looked a little tricky on paper and looked that way after working 3 wide to sit in a forward position, making the win all that more impressive. Moshiki continues to be a thorn in the Mugs side but think Express Princess wins by 5L if she has a kinder run. One to follow. Hallowed Girl goes in the forgive file after a torrid run wide the trip.

Race 6 - 3YO Handicap - 1615m

Winner: Tumbler Ridge $13

Time: 1:38.59

O'dea and Hoysted seemed to have a strangle hold on Race 6, but the lesser fancied of the two won! What a shocker! Justin Huxtable continues to match it with the seniors and bet he's enjoying these cheap paychecks from free rolling front runners because no other jockey seems to understand a speed map. It was a matter of which O'dea runner wanted they wanted to win. The colt is just a cut below that top 3YO bunch after being so competitive with them in his first couple of preps but he seemed to absolutely relished getting to the mile for the first time so the team looked to have figured him out. Nothing else worth noting except for forwarding Police to J Hux's mansion after robbing the BRC of about $50,000 here.

Race 7 - 3YO Quality Handicap - 1050m

Winner: Ballistic Lover $4

Time: 1:00.71

This was the clash the Mugs came to see and they did not dissapoint, in a sizzling time Ballistic Lover led from pillar to post. Blue Zebra decided to take a sit and the sharps honed in on Simply Fly. Simply Fly was 8L last on the turn and looked absolutely spent yet rocketed home for a heart in your mouth finish, saluting that 3YO form we've been raving about. The winner looked to have put an awkward stride in on the winning post yet nothing showed up in the stewards report so we'll find out about this injury after it races next time I guess. The quinella look that cut above over the 1000m but should read a good form race going forward.

Race 8 - Open HCP - 1200m

Winner: Racecourse Road $3.30

Time: 1:09.88

#They knew.

It was a race in two and the quinella saluted. After it seemed on pace was the place to be, the money came for the ever consistent gelding.

Jadentom wasn't riden to flash by Brisbane's inform jockey Andrew Mallyon so we're happy to put that effort in the forgive pile as he head's to a Stradbroke. Embrace Me was an eyecatching run after being slow out of the gates and keeping 6 wide the trip, she's one to follow after that showing first up in a strong field. She hasn't won in a long time, but 2nd up if she draws a gate could certainly entertain her.

Race 9 - F&M Class 6 - 1350m

Winner: Wonderful Riri $5.50

Time: 1:20.41

Wonderful Riri is deadest airborne since arriving in QLD. Ben Thompson weaved this girl through the field and she absolutely donkey licked them and was certainly win of the day. Great to see Gem of Scotland hitting the line well only to find a pretty good one beating her home. Was a big field, messy race, not a lot ran on apart from the quinella. Leaving it there

Win of the Day: Wonderful Riri

Captivator: Tough on pacer who's close to breaking through, the mile suits, seems to grow a leg with some cut on the ground. 1600, soft, draws easy.
