The Groups 1s are south of the border and we are treated to absolute perfection up here. Midweek racing returns up the highway as we head to the Sunshine Coast Turf club this week and delve into what looks a bit of an ordinary card of racing. We will be racing on a good 4 track, to start the day at least, with the rail out three metres for the entire course with the first race is to jump at 13.08pm AEST.
Race 1: Benchmark 65 (1200M)
Not keen this race, the favourite comes through a win then a 12th but that was in the Group 2 Champagne Classic at Eagle Farm and the other two in the market have form around Flaming Conquest and Invinovich which lines up nicely but hard to split those so we are staying out.
Race 2: Maiden (1200M)
Nope, nope, nope. There are about eight first starters and mixed form the rest, steering clear.
Race 3: Maiden (1200M)
Another impossible race to assess but I am going to throw one out here. We have landed on Affability for the Chris Waller team. She has had one start up here in Queensland and gets her first go on a good track and that could be the tick. She will go forward and if she doesn’t peak on her run like last start at Ipswich then she can prove hard to beat here with Byrne on board.
Race 4: Class 3 (2200M)
Pretty keen on Heart of a Lion here back on a good surface. She has won once over this trip and a second and I think you just bin the last run on the heavy track. She will shoot forward from the draw and with the strong riding of Noel Callow could be hard to hold out here with fitness on her side and a lot of the favours, the $7.60 is value.
Race 5: Benchmark 68 (1600M)
It may look awful on paper but I am sticking win Roller Coaster here. James Orman road both Blazen Boots and Roller Coaster last start and has sided with the latter. He draws out wide and will try and take up a position midfield in the run. He trialled up really nicely and a first up 9th looks bad on paper but the run wasn’t that bad.
Race 6: Class 1 (1600M)
Well we caught Kronenbourg last start after the brutal amount of scratchings. He was very impressive first up in Australia and will only improve off the back of that. Stepping out over further looks as if he will only improve and with Ben Thompson retaining the ride pretty keen to play and make him best of the day.
Race 7: Class 3 (1200M)
Happy to leave this race alone, nothing jumps of the page here.
Race 8: Benchmark 65 (1400M)
I think our trainers in the Hulberts here could have the winner with Night Guy. With storms predicted in the afternoon and rain about the surface may really have the sting out and with that kind of form and fifth run this preparation from the inside draw he finds the right race here. His form prior to last start has been super so sticking with at the nice price of $8 with Aidens claim.
