Group 1 racing...blah, blah, blah. There's two weeks left of the King Of The North Tipping Comp, Mugs, so if you haven't signed up for Week 5, do it now! We're at Cairns on Saturday for Newmarket Day, so get your Cairns form DONE! Click the image below to buy your Entry.
Great, you've paid your entry for Saturday's comp and now you need to win that money back. What better way to do it than with an eight-race card at Rocky? The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is out 4m today. The first goes at 12:55pm AEST.
Race 1: Class 3 Plate (1819m)
Shades of Chris Waller Middle Distance Handicap here over the 1819m. You'd have to be sick to be betting in this.
Race 2: Maiden Plate (1400m)
This isn't the strongest maiden you will ever see, but I'm pretty keen on the chances of Devil Kick, who threw the race away last start. The filly by Scissor Kick looked home and hosed over the 1300m here on August 1, but after running around in the straight she got beaten 0.3 of a length. She meets Regal Field 1kg better, has a couple of gear changes to help straighten her up and she rises to the 1400m which will suit. This is hers to lose.
Race 3: Ratings Band 0-55 Handicap (1200m)
Since heading north, Annakuri has been a totally different horse. He went super at Mackay three back when second to Shaluna, and then he ran a really good race behind Cool 'N' Ready and Big Sky Country who have both gone really well since. The 4YO won his maiden last start back up at Mackay, beating Frazzled who then won at Rocky, so the form looks good. The big track will suit and the good draw is a plus. He can go back-to-back.
Race 4: Benchmark 70 Handicap (1100m)
Tru Blu Tango wins, but we don't want to take $1.45.
Race 5: 3YO Handicap (1050m)
If anything, the trial of Ikigai Star was good enough to warrant having small on at the big odds. He didn't do a whole lot on debut, bug Wiggington put him away, took the blinkers off and trialled him behind a couple of smart ones in Just Super and Step This Way. Nice draw, handy jock.
Race 6: Class 2 Handicap (1050m)
No thanks.
Race 7: Ratings Band 0-55 Handicap (1500m)
Phoenix Flyer has done enough at his past two starts when third behind Bold Pedro and Matador over 1500m and 1600m respectively. He comes back to 1500m this afternoon, and seen as he is rock-hard fit, he will be rolling along on speed with no weight on his back giving them something to chase. With the rail out, he could just be in the right part of the track.
Race 8: Benchmark 70 Handicap (1500m)
Deep Breath is coming off a fourth in the Rockhampton Cup, so despite having to jump from Lakes Creek Road and carry me on his back, he should have the class to win a BM70. Melea Castle looks in for a good afternoon, so we are hoping to see her let the horse jump and run, because if she does, she will be winning. He's clearly the class in this race.
