Rockhampton Best Bets & Preview | August 5
- Mugs Punting

It's a fairly underwhelming seven-race card at Rocky today, but there's still a couple of good bets across the card. We're on a Good 4 and the rail is out just the 0.5m, so expect the track to play a lot more evenly than last week when the fence was hotter than us three Mugs at Retros.
Race 1: 3YO Maiden (1200M)
The money went on Tennyson Miss last week and I thought she held her own without being great. There's even less ability in this race, Huxtable goes on, and she draws the one alley. She should improve with race experience.
Race 2: Maiden Handicap (1050M)
Moochi Starlight looks ready to win. He had good form in New South Wales, before making his CQ debut over the carnival where he was well backed into $5.50 behind Over Draft and Wise Choice. That race has been red hot, with winners galore out of it. He went to Mackay last start and was grabbed late by Ravenite who had been racing well. The wide draw isn't ideal, but he's in well after the claim and should take beating.
Race 3: Open Handicap (1100M)
Tricky race with plenty of hopes, but Deep Blast is the one who can sit off the speed and blouse them late. He won a similar race this track and trip two back, before not having much luck in the Newmarket a month ago. Back to 1100m in this grade should suit.
Race 4: Class 6 (1400M)
Staying out of this. Have been against the favourite it's past few, won't be chiming in now at $1.40.
Race 5: BM60 (1300M)
There's a good chance that it's a case of Jump, Lead, Win for Outwitted. He won really well first-up and then beat all bar Lone Artist home on Newmarket Day last month. He's going really well for Cook, finds a pretty thin race and draws perfectly in two with Butler on.
Race 6: Class 1 (1100M)
Irish Rocket is a lightly-raced 5YO who is building a consistent record. In three runs this prep, she's finished no worse than fourth, and they've all been in similar-strength races to this. From gate five, she should land in the first five or six and chime in at the right time under Murphy. Looks set to peak fourth-up on a big track.
Race 7: 0-55 (1500M)
This is an awful race. I thought before seeing prices that Roy's Road could be worth a shilling each way if she can find her best form in a race like this. She's started no shorter than $31 in her last five starts and been beaten 4.25L or more in each, so she's not going all that well, but at least it's been in stronger races than this. A lot shorter than I expected though. Back her if you just want a winner, stay out if you're price sensitive.
