I tell ya what, Mugs, we all want to punt like demons for Champions Day, so let's build this bank at Rocky! 37 degrees and a hot Rocky Rail— we love it! Hopefully, this preview isn't all for nothing if the meeting gets called off, but seeing as Wiggo and Butler have finished their Vegas trip and are back in the form guides, they might still need a couple of extra days in the sweat chamber... Demons and kilos.
Race 1: Maiden Handicap (1300 METRES)
One Percent is an interesting runner— a 75K purchase as a yearling, sent to Moody, then to Mitch Beer, and eventually to Richard Laming before ending up in the great North as an unraced 4YO. Showed some good muster at the trials, and the apprentice has been given the flick for a returning Wiggo to ride. I think he'll be on the money early. Ricky is a wizard with these second-home horses, hoping his polish outweighs the undisclosed life-threatening injury that the punters have no idea about—lol.
Race 2: 2YO Maiden Plate (1050 METRES)
Sorry, Mugs, I’m a trial wizard but haven’t dug into the Rocky Trials. No bet.
Race 3: Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap (1050 METRES)
The cheat code is in play here—Clinton Taylor horse. But Dubious Love has trialled up well and comes out of a good form race last prep. Too early in the day to be splitting $3 shots off 'feel.'
Race 4: RJC Member OPEN Handicap (1200 METRES)
What a low-key CRACKER we've got here! Tiger Legend comes back to town with the master Jamie treatment but has to give a horse like Janean 11.5kg! Yes, you read that right. Small field, she'll just burn across them or sit in the perfect position behind TL or Stampe, who don't have a choice but to not burn the candle at the big weights. 4/4 at Rocky, she's #MUSTWIN territory.
Race 5: BENCHMARK 60 Handicap (1811 METRES)
1811m? Like seriously, bring the barriers up for god's sake. Anyway, my claim to fame is I tipped Street Glory into winning another race but against her here. Deel With Me is one I’m going to play at odds. Comes through the same race with a 4kg swing here—just way too far back in that race and meets more ass than Lloydy gets from the Leg Up members after a Saturday fill-up. Last prep, all his best form was beyond the 2000m, so his 3rd attempt at 1800m is as fit and primed as you can surely get.
Race 6: BenchMark 58 Handicap (1050 METRES)
Going through the form, there are reservations about Penman being able to blitz them over the 1000m, so happy to be against, even though Nick Walsh strikes at 99%. Pretty Slick can make it 2/2 for Moz today. Loves the Rocky 1050 and, with the claimer from barrier 8, will have no choice but to stalk the favourite the entire run.
Race 7: Class 3 Plate (1200 METRES)
There's just no reason to jump off Devil Devil. Gets in light with the Set Weights conditions, and its one trip up to the 1200m was swallowed late by Andiron, who's handy enough up here. Yep.
Race 8: BenchMark 60 Handicap (1400 METRES)
This is my game, the last-race savior! Pipistrelle does nothing wrong—62.5kg with the claim, barrier 6, apprentice on with a tonne of speed in the race? Happy to lay, lay, lay... Magic Game looks the one for me. 2/2 at the track, first real look at a Good surface, but ridden off the speed from barrier 5, there'll be plenty of tempo for it to come over them late. The favourite is a very good horse, but this setup is Christmas for Magic Game.
