Rockhampton | 23rd May

There's a bit of a Rocky flavour at Doomben this Saturday with gun 2YO Astapor going around in a $1 million race and The Archer champ Namazu (or Naarmzoo if you're name is Brolga) set to unleash in the BRC Sprint, but before we get to Saturday, there's a few goodies at Callaghan Park. We're on a Soft 5 with the rail out 6.5m, with the opener at 12:30pm.

Race 1: 3YO Open Handicap (1300m)

You need to flip a coin here. Do you side with the class of Fine Shot or the up & comer Cherry Rose? A big question, with not much of an answer. One of them...

Race 2: 3YO Maiden Handicap (1300m)

Today is the day for Flying Maple. She should have won second-up last prep and then was very good behind Hangin' Around who goes good at Mackay. Ricky Vale has eased off her a touch, freshened her and has found a very winnable maiden for her today. She will be too good with even luck.

Race 3: Class 3 Plate (1050m)

I wanted to find Acrophobic off a really sharp barrier trial, but the 1050m under race conditions is a different beast. Can't really push anything in this field.

Race 4: Class 6 Handicap (1400m)

See Race 1 notes. Again, Awol or Track Tale, Track Tale or Awol. One of them...

Race 5: Maiden Handicap (1100m)

There was a few whispers around for Nat McCall's galloper Scribble a little while ago, which saw him start $2.80 on debut at the Sunshine Coast. He was poor and only beat one home, but I'm going to give him another chance in what isn't a particularly strong Rocky maiden. Short enough though.

Race 6: Class 3 Plate (1600m)

Maybe one of the sickest bets I've ever had, but I reckon General Wolffe is going well enough to win his second race at start 56 this afternoon. Since joining the Stephens barn six months ago, he's not really put in a bad run. This prep, he was good late behind Hell, and then the best from the back again last start behind the heavily-supported Pannier over 1500m here. The mile suits, as does the low draw, and Georgie Cartwright is a bonus.

Race 7: Open Handicap (1300m)

Fastconi should be coming into this off a win. He had zero luck behind Doctor Teekay at this track and trip, getting out when it was all over to run second, beaten half a length. He's drawn a gate to be able to get to the outside a bit sooner under J P Stanley, and he should prove far too strong late. He's probably a fringe Rocky Newmarket horse. Any futures markets????

Race 8: Benchmark 55 Handicap (1200m)

On suspicion, I'm with Jungle Beat after his last-start romp. He ran times that would test Chinny Boom, but I'm well aware that he could rock up and run a time that Tugcoat Cliffy could challenge. If he repeats what we saw 10 days ago, he will go straight to the front and they won't beat him. IF!
