Days like this is what we Mugs thrive for. Feature racing in North Queensland - bliss. I wouldn't expect anything else from the Sugar City, with a Good 4 deck, fine conditions and the rail in the true position. Bring it on.
Race 1: Maiden Plate (1200m)
This is the worst maiden I've seen in my life. What a way to start Newmarket Day?!
Race 2: 3YO Handicap (1300m)
Good little 3YO race this. I'll fall off my chair if one of the top 3 don't win, and I'm siding with Bold Comic who was a really good winner here two starts back and then raced well behind Termagent at the Sunshine Coast at its next start. 1300m is the knock.
Race 3: Benchmark 70 (1100m)
The 1100m is the knock, but I think Dollar Dollar has a bit on this field, even short of his best. He was super first-up last prep in SEQ, and there looks plenty of pressure in this race to set it up for him late from the inside draw. He gets Justin Stanley which is a big plus considering he's been glued to Single Memo all prep.
Race 4: H.L. Black Memorial (1800m)
I'm having a peanut each way on I Say Boom at any old odds. He took it to Acrohobic a few starts ago who's won a few more since. This bloke has done nothing since, but with no weight, a soft run and Georgie in the saddle, he might show something again on his home track.
Race 5: 0-58 (1800m)
Hard pass.
Race 6: 0-55 (1100m)
Here I like horse 10, Whitsunday Session. She was a good winner on debut before being sent to the paddock. She resumed at Rockhampton a fortnight ago, was well backed and finished on the heels of the quinella in a race won by Within Reason who had metro form. She should take improvement from that, and Justin Stanley does the riding for the Clinton Taylor barn.
Race 7: Mackay Newmarket (1300m)
I have been with Tiger Legend his past two, and I'm bullish today that he just wins. When Ash Butler did the steering at Eagle Farm two back, he took no prisoners from the low gate, ran them a merry dance and had the race won at the 200m, and I expect similar today. He had to go back to near last in the Rocky Newmarket from the wide gate, but now drawn in 4 with Butler back on, he can settle closer, gets a 2kg swing over Honkytonk Diva and can take out the feature for local trainer John Manzelmann and Rocket Lodge.
Race 8: Benchmark 65 (1300m)
Hopefully I'm counting the cash from the race before still. Calling it a day after the Newmarket!
