Mackay | July 4

Perfect racing conditions are in store for us this afternoon at the Sugar City, with nine of the best on a Good 4 track. The rail is in the true position, so everything should get their chance. Plenty of shorties to work with, so let’s see how we go!

Race 1: QTIS 2YO Handicap (1200m)

The market has it down to a race in two and that’s the way I see it too. Early on there was meat on the Outback Bandit bone, but not anymore.

Race 2: Maiden Handicap (1100m)

I thought Effeminate would be favourite again after starting $2 at Townsville in his NQ debut. His form in two runs in Victoria was strong enough to suggest he could be winning there, and while he was a bit dour over the 1000m, he went okay to run third. Up to 1200m today he should take beating.

Race 3: Open Handicap (1560m)

The $2 for Awol provided he can bounce back after a last-start failure at Rocky looks a gift. He was a big winner over Track Tale the start before that, and she’s since bolted in. Mackay should suit and I expect him to win this.

Race 4: BM60 Handicap (1560m)

Similar case to race one here with the market narrowing it down to two horses, but I’m with the Ricky Vale-trained Luvin’ Our Grace. She comes out of the same race as the second favourite Sir Grace and gets 0.5kg off him here. Up to the mile suits.

Race 5: 3YO Class 2 Handicap (1300m)

This isn’t a bad little race. No bet though.

Race 6: Class 6 Plate (1300m)

Interested to see what Andalus does in his NQ debut over 1300m. Staying out of it thought and just watching. Could be the horse to levitate to Mackay Cup potential.

Race 7: 0-58 Handicap (1300m)

The One Syndications team can make it a winning double this afternoon. Sailor’s Rum looked mighty impressive in his maiden win here a couple of weeks ago in very good time. He should find the front again and be making it 2/2 this prep, but there’s no spoils in his price. Nice horse.

Race 8: Lightning Open Handicap (1100m)

Cochrane is back for the sickos. No.

Race 9: Class 3 Plate (1100m)

Growl has done nothing in his two Queensland runs and hasn’t shown much for a little while, but he can find his best, he’d win a race like this. He was better last time at Thangool over the 800m, warming up late to run fourth. Out to 1100m today should suit. Completely gone if he shows nothing here.
