Well after a Group 1 filled extravaganza and footy finals including a Sunday Doomben meeting we return to the spiritual home of racing in Queensland, yes Mugs that’s right Royal Ipswich the place where winnie blues and pluggers are more of a staple than four ‘n’ twenty pies at the footy.
To kick us off this beautiful Wednesday we have good 4 track conditions and the rail out five metres but as we always say at Ipswich on the pace is generally the place to be as its rarely a track that gives backmarkers a good opportunity.
The second race of the day is where the mugs find their first bet and while I find sometimes horses have a poor run second up Better Get Set should just be way too good here. The run in behind contemptuous on the pace was strong and further fitness with big dog Baylee in the saddle should be too smart for these.
Another small field with only eight runners lining up in the third and there is a Waller runner here that seems slightly over the odds. Aeecee Sacred comes off a first up second in behind Shosha and last start was well in the market and just hampered key stages in the run home when building momentum then had to shift around horses late and still came with a nice strong late surge. In this field with a bit of pace on, drawn out to avoid trouble I think will be powering over them late second up.
Michelle Payne looks to saddle one up here over the longer trip and while Smokin Pierro comes up favourite here happy to leave this race alone, just looks like another muddling distance race at Ipswich, personally the best ride usually wins these as the tactics are key.
Baylee looks to add another in the fifth with a the second start maiden Thatfeelsbetter coming here off two trial seconds. Prior to that he had one start which was a smart second to Prince of Boom who is well above average. Gets out to the 1200M here which will suit as he did pick up and run on again late in his first up run.
In the penultimate we have the winner versus the who knows what he is race. Whozyadeeler had all the hype in the world and made it 2/2 early on but has since come up a bit short where as Doctor Teekay is 2/2 this prep and will go forward taking up a nice spot. I have to side with the doctor here, he will go forward and put himself in the race and showed that he does have a nice turn of foot when required. Should make it 3/3 here at a track where he is yet to be beaten.
Finally we round out the day with a pretty average class 1 but there is one here that has been knocking on the door. Kiki Coco ran super last time here at Ipswich then went up to Toowoomba for another stylish second doing all the donkey work but just couldn’t catch the leader. Finally draws a gate here in four and for there Wendy Peel steering again with the claim should be able to take up the running or if not be just in behind stalking the whole way and power over them late.
