Eagle Farm Best Bets + Preview | October 22

Well we are well and truly in Spring and nothing sais Spring like a tiny seven race card at Eagle Farm on a Wednesday with all the superstars arriving in Melbourne for the Cox Plate. We find ourselves on a soft 5 track throughout the day with the rail out ten and a half metres for entire course and the first race to jump at 1.33pm.

Race 1: MAIDEN (1600M)

We start the day with a maiden over the mile which is an interesting race on paper. The usual suspects are all here and Tulong who while beaten a fair margin latest over the mile one was of the few on speed runners to hold their position. He will get a similar run in transit today and will be peaking third up over the same trip.

Race 2: Class 3 (1000M)

Another smaller field here but not short of chances either. Cabaletto was very good first up at Toowoomba over the 1000M and may be looking for further but if she gets her own way in front again they simply won’t catch her. However I am siding with Dream Smart for the Birchley team. She was great fresh last time, comes through a nice trial behind Belegato and if close enough an be winning this.

Race 3: MAIDEN (1000M)

Keeping it simple here, there are a lot of first starters and while Vesper Lynd may be starting to look like a non-winner she will go to the front, has a high cruising speed an race experience on her side, happy to play her each-way in a very open maiden.

Race 4: Benchmark 65 (1800M)

Well put simply Mr Buster just got knocked off by a mare in form last start. There is not the conundrum today, Maloney sticks, out in trip will suit and there doesn’t look to be a tonne of class amongst the rest of these so take the short way home.

Race 5: Class 2 (1600M)

Well the shorts are about Pharoh’s Prophecy but I just cannot take that price. Yes there is probably a lack of tempo but he does like to find one better a bit even from the eight starts and always starts short. Fifth Force should sit handy to the tempo here like last start and has a great record over this trip, back him each-way here.

Race 6: Class 5 (1200M)

Mintaka Lad was very good last start and strikes similar field here today, drawn a little better and with the claimer engaged, I do see him pretty hard to hold out even with a lack lustre second up record. His work over this distance is very good.

Race 7: Benchmark 70 (1400M)

This race is pretty competitive but Captain Fenkel just stands out. Some of his work last preparation in behind horses like Transatlantic, Tuff Tu Mus, The Inflictor if he runs up to how he did in some of those races surely with the three kilo claim he can put this field to bed. There should be a lack of speed inside so can come across with Good Lieutenant and kick away late.
