Doomben | September 14

Writer: Mugs PuntingMugs Punting

Well with Group 1 races across both our southern neighbours the quality doesn’t end there with our Doomben midweek card trying to rival those meets. Fair to say perhaps a slight drift in quality but do not rule the Mugs out; we are here to find some winners. We will be racing on a Soft 5 track with the rail out 6m for the entire course, while the first race is set to jump at 12.33pm AEST.

Race 1: MAIDEN (1050M)

Starting off with a Brandon “Mozza” Morris special and I am launching the favourite. Drammatica comes to this race off a trial and two subsequent seconds going down by a total of less than one length. Steps out here to the 1050M but with pace on and the rail out it should be an even day and backmarkers getting a chance.

Race 2: MAIDEN (1110M)

Steering clear of this race with a fair few first starters just better to watch. Caesaris was good her last two starts but one of these debutants could be anything, follow the market.

Race 3: Class 3 (1640M)

A pretty competitive mile race here as the betting suggests but a southern raider in Penso A Lei stands out. It was first up last start in a small field at Wyong and was in behind Sanstoc who ran a pretty good race last start against a competitive field at Canterbury Park. This horse definitely does not win out of turn but gets a chance here with a light weight and second up over a similar trip.

Race 4: MAIDEN (1350M)

The favourite is a first starter which is risky and there is a field of about a thousand so I won’t be playing here. There is a big watch on Kronenbourg from the wide alley for Gollan - an ex-Kiwi horse first up for the yard. The booking of Ben Thompson is a push and he did have two impressive enough runs over similar trips across the ditch.

Race 5: Benchmark 68 (2040M)

Going to follow in the top weight here in Populist who I know is very hard to catch, but if you are going to back the 7YO, its on a soft to good track and over 2000M so this is the recipe. Third up today and building to peak fitness; has drawn nicely in barrier five to be within striking distance and class should prevail here.

Race 6: Benchmark 68 (2040M)

Otyrar comes to this race a short priced favourite and deservedly so as he has been racing well. I am however siding with the Kris Lees-trained Sacramento Joe coming up from a last start run at Scone. He is second up here today and draws the pole which for a backmarker might be a little sticky but with Maloney on board that should offset it. This horse flies second up has only missed a place once from three starts over this trip with his best work on good and soft tracks so tomorrow is his day.

Race 7: Class 4 (1200M)

There is a track and distance specialist in this race and that is Rich Lister. Pretty keen to back this mare today back to her favourite track and over this trip. This is her third run back, so she should be at peak fitness. She can get back in races and so perhaps last start at Ipswich the track didn’t suit and probably the shorter trip. She gets all the favours today and can win this at a juicy $6 quote.

Race 8: Class 1 (1350M)

This race has a bit of quality but for me it is just too hard. Millward, Deep Tempest and Son of Mercury are all chances so it’s a no bet race.

Race 9: Benchmark 68 (1350M)

We finish the day with a super even field over the classic 1350M at Doomben. I am siding with the Waller trained Roller Coaster here who I really liked out of the trials and yes he did run four of five but was under a really strong hold. The key here that adds a lot of confidence is the booking of James Orman. This bloke goes well first up and is one from two this trip so at the $11 he is a super bet.
