Doomben | November 17

Well the local mugs return to the place where dreams are made up here in sunny Queensland and we are treated to a cracking mid week card at Doomben for this weeks mid-week racing. We are running on a Soft 5 with the rail out 6m for the entire course with the first race to jump at 1:18pm AEST.

Race 1: 2YO MAIDEN (1110M)

Very even race this with all bar two unraced so plenty up in the air. The return on Ben Thompson after his suspension and he gets aboard Our Heart Throb here for Gollan who ran in behind Saweetie in a trial leading in. Saweetie did all bar win on Saturday so if the market support comes I think Ben can kick of his return to racing with a win.

Race 2: 4YO & UP MAIDEN (1640M)

We don’t muck around up here early on and quickly we punch out to the shoot start over the 1640M. David Van Doomben brings the short priced favourite in Jewel Flight here and Benny looks to nab a quick double early. While looks a good chance that should lead them off Matthew Dunn brings Vitae up from a run at the mile down at Wyong and there is form around her. Two back she was beaten by Bend the Knee who was ultra impressive winning over the Flemington carnival. She handles the sting out the track and has been building to this. Will go very very close.

Race 3: 3YO MAIDEN (1640M)

Ashgrove is back at the races again while the two thirds have been ultra impressive running on he is becoming a little costly, while he will have admirers and is from the astute yard there is another that had a super first up run. Strongbow from the Waller stable ran on Cup day and missed the jump at Eagle Farm and was three or four lengths last out of the barrier. He came home like an absolute freight train and with the step out past the mile is the value in this race. Pace will be on from the inside and if the track is playing fair he can win this from the wide alley.

Race 4: Class 1 Handicap (1050M)

We are back to the sprint trip for the colts, geldings and entires handicap here and in the smaller field there is a pretty smart one with some form lines that have really stacked up. Debussy should be as fit as a fiddle coming off three lead in trials suggesting he will be well and truly wound up. Prior to the had beaten home the very smart Pentito and then in the Grp 3 Ken Russell was in behind the likes of Dovetail Diva, Subterranean and Ranch Hand, the latter who was super over the cup carnival.

Race 5: Class 1 Handicap (1050M)

We stick to the short sprint trip here and Dovetail Diva is back and takes on the short priced favourite in Single Memo and they look the two to keep an eye on. Single Memo was so impressive on debut and was subsequently held out up at the Sunshine Coast in a small four horse field. She should get a similar run from draw to her first up run and if they go hell for leather up front she will storm over the top late.

Race 6: Class 4 Handicap (1640M)

In the Class 4 over the mile the usual suspects have turned up over the last couple of months in Vendidit, Danezel and Phantom Court. They have all mixed form of late and have yet to be consistent. I have gone a bit wide in the second leg of the quaddie in last start winner The Carpenter. Ran on well to win over the 1300M at Toowoomba and prior to that was fifth in behind The Ritz and Spokesman who has come out and franked that form line. Does appear to lack pace on paper but I think a few will take it up and should set up nicely for The Carpenter.

Race 7: Benchmark 0 – 65 Handicap (1200M)

In the penultimate event we are back to the sprint trip and there are a few up from the Gold Coast in Rich Devil and Coat of Arms and while impressive latest I do think they will both be hard pressed to beat Fetch. Looked the winner last start when just nabbed late but does get Thompson back aboard and I think this pair can make it 2/2 here. Out to a more suitable trip and with pace on from Better Get Ready, Fall On A Star and Rich Devil it will setup for Fetch to unleash that startling turn of foot.

Race 8: Benchmark 68 (1350M)

In the final event of the day there looks to be pace on pace on pace. Tick Tock Boom was a very nice run but just knocked up late the final fifty metres last start. Gets to a suitable trip here and from barrier one should be sitting just in behind the pace. The short winding circuit will suit and we get somewhat a price in what is probably the hardest race of the day.
