Doomben 10,000 Runner by Runner Mugs Preview

We are finally here! All the neglect and embarassment that is QLD Racing is forgotten by everyone for 8 weeks as we enter the Winter Carnival, the Carnival to save it all!

Not since 2019 has the Doomben 10,000 been run and won, when a handy little 50/1 shot named 'The Bostonian' screamed up the inside to past a classic 1000m horse Nature Strip and the always charging for second Osborne Bulls.

The 2021 is a little lackluster on paper, with the nomination of Nature Strip surely forcing trainers to change plans with their horses preparation, but in classic Chris Waller style he gives a big F U to punters and withdrawing the enigmatic sprinter last minute.

1. Trekking (J: K McEvoy T: J Cummings)

Barrier 10 - Best available Odds $7.5

Doomben Stats: 0: 0-0-0 Distance Stats: 19: 4-4-2 This Prep: 1: 0-0-0

The ever consistent 6YO comes to Sunny QLD for another crack at a Stradbroke Crown. Resumed 1st up in the Victory Stakes with a fading 5th behind Niccanova. If you watch the replay he certainly loomed the winner at the 200m but faded quicker than a father not paying child support. He has 3 wins from 8 attempts second up but the Mugs think we don't have the best Trekking this prep that we've seen in the past. Has it all to do from Barrier 10. (PS HOW CAN YOU FORIGIVE HIM FROM THAT WINTERBOTTOM SMH)

2. Eduardo (J: N Rawiller T: J Pride)

Barrier 6 - Best available Odds $2.05

Doomben Stats: 0: 0-0-0 Distance Stats: 5: 1-1-1 This Prep: 3: 2-0-1

Arguably Australia's most consistent sprinter this year, was incredible first up against Nature Strip, then backed that performance up in the Galaxy! His 1200m record is blemished from his early days with his last 3 starts at the trip including runs in the G2 Missile (1st), The Everest (11th off a stupid tempo) and 3rd in the TJ Smith. He's the obvious form line coming into the race and looks to lead for fun, it could be a matter of how far.

3. Kings Will Dream (J: L Dittman T: C Waller)

Barrier 4 - Best available Odds $46

Doomben Stats: 0: 0-0-0 Distance Stats: 1: 1-0-0 This Prep: First Up

Could start running today and still miss out. A champion horse on his farewell tour, this is an obvious stepping stone for a Stradbroke Handicap mission. Has not run over the 1200m since his first start in Australia down at The Bool in the ol' Darren 'Gettin Jiggy with it' Weir days.

4. Wild Planet (J: R Maloney T: M W J Hawkes)

Barrier 7 - Best available Odds $21

Doomben Stats: 0: 0-0-0 Distance Stats: 4: 1-2-0 This Prep: First Up

An interesting runner that's probably in the same boat as KWD here. The son of Animal Kingdom doesn't do his best work fresh nor over the 1200m. He can sit handy so look for him to be in the top half of the field, but could be in the awkward position of leading the pack up to Eduardo. Second up into the Kingsford Smith (1300m) could be a very attractive target if he puts in a solid showing here.

5. Splintex (J: J Parr T: M Newnham)

Barrier 1 - Best available Odds $10

Doomben Stats: 0: 0-0-0 Distance Stats: 4: 2-0-1 This Prep: 3: 1-0-0

The baby of the field, the 4YO horse is desperately looking for that Group 1 scalp for the illustrious rooting career that potentially awaits, but meets a 115 rater at WFA this is an assignment and a half. The positives, he's a speed horse, he'll be able to sit in the perfect position from the gun draw. The big question mark is if the 1200m not being his go. Splintex has shown a dynamic cruising speed over the 1000-1100 trip but potentially having to lead the second half of the field behind a frantic tempo then have the ability to quicken to get past Eduardo? We don't think so.

6. Vega One (J: G Boss T: T Gollan)

Barrier 7 - Best available Odds $14

Doomben Stats: 7: 2-3-0 Distance Stats: 5: 0-1-0 This Prep: 2: 0-1-0

The dynamic Vega One returns for another tilt at a Stradbroke after still running on from last years edition. The difference this year is these sharper Group 1's are a realistic goal for this 5YO. He was awarded ballot exemption last year and that created the path, this year he's coming in 3rd up to a race like this and looking to be at full fitness. He'll get the dream run, pace will be on, he'll find cover from barrier 3 and be able to produce a turn of foot to figure in the finish.

7. The Harrovian (J: B Stewart T: T & T Edmonds)

Barrier 8 - Best available Odds $27

Doomben Stats: 2: 2-0-0 Distance Stats: 5: 4-0-0 This Prep: First Up

The people's champ is BACK and is certainly not out of his depth in a field like this. Last prep everything culminated to a terrific showing in the All Star Mile, he's a tough galloper that thrives off pressure racing and that can be seen from his wins and Doomben and Eagle Farm last prep. The question is fitness, how sharp can the Big H be over the 1200m first up, we hope he's storming home as he looks a genuine Stradbroke horse if he can sneak in on a decent weight.

8. Graff (J: J Byrne T: T Gollan)

Barrier 8 - Best available Odds $21

Doomben Stats: 0: 0-0-0 Distance Stats: 7: 0-1-0 This Prep: First Up

Where to begin here, con it's Graff, pro it's Graff under Tony Gollan!

If the champion trainer gets Graff winning he will truly be in a league of his own. In an overated career to date, you simply cannot have Graff on form and form alone. But we'll be having a bet on him because we can not help ourselves.

9. Wild Ruler (J: J McDonald T: P & P Snowden)

Barrier 2 - Best available Odds $5

Doomben Stats: 0: 0-0-0 Distance Stats: 4: 2-0-2 This Prep: 3: 2-0-0

The baby of the field looks primed for a good Brisbane campaign, but meets Eduardo 4.5KG worse off than their Galaxy clash, plus a rain effected track, there's is just a couple of big concerns for the Mugs. Think he'll do his best work on a fast Doomben track and from barrier 2 may be forced to plonk himself in an uncomfortable position close to the speed.

10. Pennino (J: R Fradd T: D Hansen)

Barrier 9 - Best available Odds $61

Doomben Stats: 12: 1-2-1 Distance Stats: 16: 4-2-4 This Prep: 1: 1-0-0

We get to the bolters of the field and wow, 63 for Pennino seems overs if you look at it's last start, running a length to Niccanova and .2 to Vega One. The blemish is consistency with this horse. A tricky draw for this horse as he'll have to go back to near last and can't seem him producing a turn of foot like some of these can, a roughie for the wide's though.

11. Embrace Me (J: J Bayliss T: E O'Rourke)

Barrier 5 - Best available Odds $101

Doomben Stats: 2: 0-1-0 Distance Stats: 14: 3-0-1 This Prep: 3: 0-1-0

Don't know what the story is with this horse, showed potential as 3YO winning the Group 3 Typhoon Tracey in front of horses like Multaja and Humma Humma, since then has not been back in the winner's stall. This is an obvious step up but can't go close if Eduardo had 2 legs.

Who are the Mugs launching?

Moz - Eduardo

Bean - The Harrovian

Lloydy - Vega One

There's ya FECCY
