Well 24 trials stepped out at Doomben Racecourse last Tuesday and let me tell you, these wanna be Mugs Punting reporters are kidding themselves to release a 'review' 20 minutes after it's over, ya kidding me.
The art of trials is not neccesarily looking for 'Nature Strips' winning these things by 10L, it's finding the horses working well within themselves, lower class horses working with better quality horses. The Mugs have ran their eyes over the replays and made some comments to note on what was an action packed morning.
Heats 1 – 15 (1000m)
Fastest of the morning: 0:57.47 - Heat 3 won by Really Discreet
Slowest of the morning: 0:59.98 – Heat 10 won by Mooshiner
Best closing 600m: 34.06 - Heat 3 won by Really Discreet
Heats 1 – 4 were the obvious highlights of the 1000m heats. Horses like Vega One, Tyzone, Hard Empire and more made there return to the track.
Comment on horses to follow:
Heat 1: Vega One – WOW, jumped, led, and ripped the arms of the jockey. Serious local Stradbroke hope. Sofie’s Gold Class – went to the line untouched in Heat 1, thought she finished off better than Tyzone
Heat 2: Maozi: cruised through to the line, looks ready to go 1st up
Heat 3: Bit of a nothing trial, even though it was the quickest of the morning. Really Discreet was urged along early and the others not asked to do a lot. Hard Empire closed well after given a rubatugtug
Heat 4: Again, not a lot to note, Baller cruised up in front and looks ready first up.
Heat 5: We’ve found a pull up job here, Secret Agent Man was cruising and couldn’t keep up with the sprinters late, he’ll be cricket score odds but will keep an eye on up to the 2000. Dee Day Diva finished off well. These are the 2 to follow out of this heat.
Heat 6: Liked the way Dash for Dreams finished off. Ready for her 3rd prep she looks like she worked home well with some experienced campaigners.
Heat 7: Willinga Panache looked good but was expected to mid prep. Nothing here
Heat 8: The Move destroyed them, wonder if that was the plan to build his confidence. When a horse destroys them in a trial it usually means you don’t get much vision of anything else.
Heat 9: Auron a nice winner and looks to be close to going to the races, though The Landing worked home the best, still a maiden so keep an eye as he gets out to 1400-1600
Heat 10: Slowest of the morning due to the fact no one wanted to lead. Klenice was hard held the whole trial, one to follow here; is an unraced 3YO by Lonhro, the Dam won up to 1400.
Heat 11: Leave Me Along with blinkers on jumped incredible so looks like they’re trying something different here with the maiden.
Heat 12: Not Too Hard jumped at the start but wasn’t asked to do a lot cruising through with some that were put to work, probably needs another trial
Heat 13: I think they’ll be a few winners from this trial, Wolf Moon runs Saturday (17/04) so we’ll get to see this early. Palladas looks to be in for a big prep.
Heat 14 (2YO): Wow, we could have on here. Fetch was super impressive, jumped clean them settled nicely before coming around horses to produce a turn of foot, not a lot of 2YO can do that. One to follow.
Heat 15 (2YO): Another one for the O’Dea/Hoysted yard It’s All Talk – was last on the turn, asked for an effort and responded. Looks a nice Eagle Farm/Sunshine Coast horse. Barassi looks a class horse to follow as well.
Heats 16-24 840m
Fastest of the morning: 0:49.59 - Heat 19 won by Timestorm
Slowest of the morning: 0:50.49 – Heat 17 won by Miss Hipster
Best closing 600m: 33.69 - Heat 24 won by Jaydee Indy
Heats 16-22 we saw the 2YO’s step out
Heats 23 & 24 some experienced campaigners over the shorter start
Heat 16: Huxtable was absolutely swinging off Berdini’s Girl, she’s come back super
Heat 17: Looked to be a slow trial to the eye and times confirmed that. Miss Hipstar was good winning this heat after doing a lot more work than you should do in a trial, Thatfeelsbetter was also huge finish sharp off a slow pace
Heat 18: It looked like Star Gamble was trying to win an Everest, messy trial, Stepping Stone the most professional, jumped well, settled well and never come off the bit.
Heat 19: In what was the fastest of the 2YO trials, Timestorm was asked for an effort from the gate and settled well when hitting the line, Quix was closing well. A few others we’ve seen already so should be able to tie these two in when they debut.
Heat 20: One the finished off super well for Team Gollan Muschialli, drew wide, jumped well never overraced and when asked for an effort delivered down the straight.
Heat 21: Rhapsody Rose has returned well, another one that looks as if they had more to give was Raw Gold
Heat 22: The Actuary was asked to do a bit but finished off well. One that was kept quiet was the Lockwood trained, I’m Magical. Strided alongside The Actuary and wasn’t asked for an effort but did things effortless, and overdue maiden winner in the making.
Heat 23: The big guns stepped out, Garibaldi was super and Graff just as impressive as they start their Winter campaigns. Nothing Unexpected here
Heat 24: Scallopini and Boomsara both looked solid as they worked through the line under cruise control, Niedorp is a speed machine so think this was just a blow out, wasn’t asked to do a lot.
