Mackay Preview 21/05/21

Writer's picture: Nick LloydNick Lloyd

We are racing in sugar country on Friday afternoon in the build up to more Group 1 racing at Doomben on Saturday. The track is good, the rail is out 3m, LETSGO!

Six runners in the first represents a pass, but we are mugs, so lets bet. Highmaster is the $1.40 favourite but he was pretty disappointing last start at Mackay so we are leaving him alone at that price. How's that sound Creamboi? Wiggo rides the second fav in Sayl and comes off an easy 3.3L win at this track last start. He should get a good run from barrier four and win again.

We will steer clear of the second, but Missy Mile has Cool Intelligence form, so we'll be cheering the Manzelmann filly home.

One runner I am keen on at Rosehill on Saturday is Saint of Katowice, and Yuan Fen comes off a third placing behind that galloper at Swan Hill last start, so we think that form should be good enough to win a maiden at Mackay. He will have to beat the short priced One More Field who has form around Garopollo, but we are happy to take it on at the price.

A cracking 2YO contest is up next and after Cochrane hurt us last time, we aren't ready to be hurt by him again. Fred Smith saddles up his unbeaten filly Kashkar, and with form in front of Yarralinda, that's the way we have to go. Barrier 1 under Ash Butler is perfect for this filly, and if she has come on since her first campaign she will be a force to be reckoned with this time in.

The fifth is a no bet race if we have seen one. Before prices came out we thought The Egyptian would be a certainty, and clearly the bookies agree - $1.26 is too short for even us.

In the sixth, we get a nine horse BM70, and we are going to play. Heyington is a better horse than the $26 quote suggests, and although he has to lug 63.5kg, the weights are relatively compressed. Heyington loves Mackay, with five wins and nine placings from 21 starts and will relish the 1300m. He will get back from the wide alley, but cream rises!

Wiggo can jag a double when he combines with Jared Wehlow in the penultimate aboard Coop's Star. The 5YO mare took a while to win one, but Wiggo found the key in her NQ debut at Townsville. Chris Whiteley did the steering next time out and she managed to run third, so the reunion with Ryan can get her back in the winner's circle. She should box seat from barrier one and take some beating in what is a pretty average race.

There is no bet for us in the last, but for those omen punters, have something on Nicks and Oddfellow - they work hand in hand!
