Ipswich Preview

With Brisbane in lockdown, all eyes will be on Glorious Ipswich!

We’ve got 9 races from the Centrelink capital of Queensland and have plenty of senior jockeys making the trip down the M5 for a competitive days racing.

The rail is out +7m and looks to be in the soft range. With rain predicted throughout the day we can expect to stay in the soft.

It may be wet, but it will certainly be a hot speed in Race 1. The ever impressive Kinky Dreams makes the trip down from North QLD after saluting at the shorts on debut. The market has narrowed it down to two, Illiciate Affairs returns to the races for Team Sears and we believe with Byrne booked it can topple the shorty. Illiciate Affairs showed just as much gate speed on debut to be then thrown into the deep end against the likes of Swift Witness and Glorious Ruby as a last ditch attempt to make the Magic Millions; the speed will be on.

We have another small field here in Race 2 and after half the field has been decimated by scratchings it becomes a no-bet race with just the five starters.

Excel in the Sun returns here for Byrne and Team Edmonds. She is one from one and has done nothing wrong, but has come up at poison odds against a field with plenty of exposed form. Sweet Rhapsody is one of those horses; can stalk the favourite everywhere she goes and with form around the likes of Snitzari and Broken Hero, she can provide the upset here for Du Plessis.

Class 1 runners will contest the fourth at set weights and sees the top 3 in the market all coming off last start wins. Arrivederci Roma looks to lead in a race with plenty of speed. This will come down to luck in running around the tight Ipswich turn; one we’ll be watching from afar.

A competitive group makes up Race 5, with the Byrne-Gollan combination saddling the favourite Vaporizing from Barrier 3. However, the Mugs are siding with the unlucky last start runner Sakura Star. It will get all the favours from barrier two and that last start form has already stacked up with Zoukhina performing well in Saturday grade.

Just when you think you’re on top of the form, a maiden pops up. Vital Source is the one that looks to have the ‘better’ record of this lot of maidens, but from barrier 13 over the 1700m we can’t have any confidence here.

The second of the 1700m races for the day sees a Class 4 handicap. Drumadoir lined up on Saturday so he has been scratched leaving another field of five to contest this one. Not looking to have a play in this race.

Race 8 sees a couple of smart ones in Sweet Snitty and The First of May return to the the races which will set up a great clash against the Nat McCall-trained Blue Odyssey who is looking for three wins on the trot. This looks to be a strong form race going forward and that’s what the Mugs will be looking for here.

We finish the day with the ‘Get Out Stakes’ over the 1350m and in form Apprentice jockey Sheriden Tomlinson will be legged aboard the favourite River Rocket who’s looking to end a run of placings. We reached out to the man himself to get an insight on how River Rocket’s been traveling:

“These horses in this race have had a very muddled lead up to this race, I think this meeting has been postponed twice now. Horses have no doubt missed gallops due to the rain last week and the conditions of the track but not River Rocket. As many are aware; rain, hail or shine LG (Ross) works his horses fast or slow. There’s a reason they handle wet tracks because they are FIT.”

In what is undoubtedly a solid push from jockey and the market, he draws to get the run of the race, sitting off Memorial Day and pub favourite Bambalam to run them down late.
