Pain. Numb. Floored.
How did Zaaki get beaten on Saturday? Honestly, spare us.
While we can dwell on the past for a little while, nine races are going to be run and won at Doomben on a MONDAY, including a very nice two-year-old for the Waller-Jmac combo in the first. The rail is out 4m and the track is a Heavy 8 - still. The opener is set to jump at 11:25am AEST, with the get out at 4:10pm.
Race 1 - 2YO Maiden Plate (1615m)
If you ask me, Political Debate is the one to beat in a fortnight in the J.J. Atkins at Group 1 level, so we are expecting to see James McDonald, Chris Waller and this cracking So You Think colt to justify his $1.35 quote in the opener. Maybe have something on him in the J.J. at $6 rather than the looooong odds on today - unless you are sick, or have nuts like Bean does.
Race 2: Maiden Plate (1615m)
The barriers stay at the 1615m starting position for the second race, where David VanDoomben seems to hold the key to the race with two of the market fancies. KWT has gone with the favourite in Jewel Flight, but if it were Up To Me, I'd be hopping on the stablemate. Up To Me was good behind Seefeld last start at only his second career start, so I expect him to strip fitter now that he is third-up, while he will appreciate the rise in trip to the mile. At $7, that's worth a bet.
Race 3: Class 3 Plate (1615m)
Is every race over 1615m today? Pike, Waller, Jack The Lad. That looks a ripping recipe for success in race three. The four-year-old was a good winner over 1400m here at Doomben two starts back before running well at the Gold Coast on Hollindale Stakes Day. He too should enjoy the rise to the 1615m, while the drop back to Class 3 company should see him prove to be different gravy. Pikey in the third!
Race 4: Maiden Plate (1200m)
Here we go, back to conventional starting positions. Maiden gallopers do battle in the fourth over 1200m, and one horse who I've been waiting to see make his debut is trial star Gulf Of Venice. The three-year-old son of Not A Single Doubt caught the eye in a Rosehill trial in January, before moving to Queensland and joining DVD's stable. In two Sunny Coast trials, he has proven too good, while Ryan Maloney has ridden him on both occasions. From barrier 10, he should go forward and give them something to chase. Nice horse.
Race 5: Class 1 Plate (1050m)
It's the half-time break for us here. Nothing has really jumped out at us, so we are going to use the time to have a quick breather before the second half.
Race 6: Benchmark 80 (2200m)
What did we do to deserve this 2200m Chris Waller Handicap on a Monday? We actually like one at odds and are siding with the old faithful, Top Order. Two runs back he was enormous in town on a Saturday, charging into second behind the in form Gave Us Up, and for some reason, connections went straight to an unwinnable Group 3. Now right back in grade, the ghostly grey can be getting the job done at odds.
Race 7: Benchmark 65 (1110m)
Tough, tough, tough! We are staying out, but keeping a close eye on Norse Mythology who joins the airborne O'Dea & Hoysted stable. He could run a race fresh today.
Race 8: Class 6 Handicap (1200m)
Orbisyn is looking to remain unbeaten, Aidesnfield is trying to breakthrough in Queensland, The Pines is aiming to build on her impressive first-up record and Mass Destruction is trying to overcome a bottomless track, so we don't really know what to do. Orbisyn is certainly good enough and his trial where he eye-balled Apache Chase looks very good on paper now, but we just think one has been completely missed by the market. Stoked is no slouch, and a recent jump out suggested that she has come back well. Maybe she will be a touch underdone here, but at $70s we have to have something on.
Race 9: Benchmark 70 Handicap (1350m)
Early mark, kiddos. Blast out in the eighth with the roughie of the day!
