Rockhampton Best Bets & Preview | November 14

Updated: Nov 14

We've got eight of the best out of Callaghan Park this afternoon, with the first kicking off at 1:32pm. We're starting the day on a Soft 5, but there is a bit of rain around so it could deteriorate, while the rail is out 1.5m the entire.

Race 1: 3YO Maiden Handicap (1050M)

It was only a trial. but Senzora won his heat by 24L, so it's hard to turn a blind eye to that. While he may not have beaten much in the trial, he ran around 2.5secs quicker thhan any of the other three 850m trials on the same morning, so he backed it up on the clock. Butler on, tick.

Race 2: BM58 (1100M)

Red Beauty was too good for Gilbert's Gold last start, and that form has been franked with Gilbert winning well since. They meet level at the weights, but Red Beauty should be the one to derive more fitness out of it being only third-up. She'll be hard to beat again,

Race 3: Maiden (1300M)

Bonewood was heavily backed on debut but went awfully. Respect the SP, but you can't have him off that run. Staying out though.

Race 4: Class 2 Handicap (1200M)

Good race this. Underrated was turned over as a very short favourite last start, so I'm looking around him. Universal Harmony broke his maiden first-up last prep here over 1100m and beat Sheza Alibi by 2.75L. That filly won at Flemington on Derby Day and is odds-on in the Sandown Guineas tomorrow, so that form surely is superior to the odds-on favourites'! He can make an impression first-up.

Race 5: 2YO Maiden (1050M)

I'll be staying out of this, with plenty of unknowns with the 2YOs.

Race 6: Class 4 (1600M)

I can't drop off Phantom Flight now that he's fourth-up and at the mile. He was beaten by 2.2L to Darling Clementine last start here over 1500m and meets her slightly worse at the weights, but he was peeling ground off her there and he did beat her first-up. Each way.

Race 7: BM55 (1400M)

Think Presszora is hard enough to beat, as she has been in all four starts, winning three and running second in the other, but she's short enough here given that one defeat was over the 1400m.

Race 8: Open Handicap (1050M)

If Cherry Rose brings her best, she should just win this. She was narrowly denied in The Fitzroy last prep before running second in the Rocky Newmarket and in the Cleveland Bay, albeit over 1300m in all three of those. Despite her better form being over a bit further than 1050m, she's four from four over this track, and three of her six wins have been first-up. She gets every chance to resume a winner before a trip to Brisbane for a better race over the summer beckons.
