Caloundra Cup Preview

Writer's picture: Mugs PuntingMugs Punting

It's the DAY OF DAYS for the Sunny Coast, the suit goes over the bikini's and Budgee Smugglers for Cup Day.

It looks to be a Heavy 47 up the coast and for the Mugs sake we hope it doesn't get canned cos we could be putting back beers at this point instead of a quirky write up.

9 Races will be won and run including our own Mystic Aroma who goes around in Race 3. She's definitely in the deep end but the rain will help and can hopefully level out some of her competition.

Listener not a reader? You can listen to the Mugs full preview below:

It's absolute chaos all round, so we're going to focus on the big ones. It's that kind of meet where some interstate horses have hung around for one more run, whereas the locals target this meet coming out of the Winter Carnival. As we said, CHAOS.

Race 6 gives us the Winx Guineas, where it all started! The 3YO's will go around at the mile with Tamilaide going around your favourite from the unbeaten Palaisipan. With little to no heavy track form for a lot of these runners it really makes it hard to rule anything out or be certain on one particular runner handling these conditions. The daughter of So You Think, Palaisipan, has done nothing wrong all in her first prep, the connections would be thrilled to get a Group race on her resume just months after making her debut. She'll likely lead from barrier 3 and with little to no pressure up front, she's shown she can take up the challenge. Not An Option is a interesting runner from NZ, went into every Mug's Blackbook first up then the ol 'Eagle Farm' excuse kicked in last start, as a kiwi you'd assume he'd handle the heavy going.. It's a cracking edition this year which we believe will be a solid form race going forward.

The CUP! Stockman is your poison odds on favourite, what odds would have Incentivise started, WOWZA. The 2400m can be a gruelling trip in the heavy. Ipswich Cup winner Happy Go Plucky brings numerous horses through that form line to contest the cup and we have the Wet Gok himself who'll relish the conditions.

The Gok looks the obvious leader in this field and will look the winner a long way out. Humbolt Current can not possibly win at his 34th start this prep. The Mugs have found plenty of value outside the Sydneysiders but he might just be that good.

Can you believe Krone won this is 2019! So it's clear it's the start of very big things for some horses! Davey Van SC has saved Desert Lord for another day which leaves topweight and crowd favourite Niccanova your favourite. It get's absolutely no favours from barrier 20, but you know he'll be storming home, whether it's too late is the question.

Emerald Kingdom comes off a great run in the Stradbroke and Snitch brings the Eyeliner form. The 'drink every time you hear it' for the day will be who handles the conditions best cliché's but we can certainly find a few by reading through the form here.

What's next for the winner here, Everest slot? tehehe
